Step-by-step Shoe Care
  1. First remove the laces from your shoes.
  2. Clean the shoes:
For wet shoes: Wash them with lukewarm water and let them dry.
For dry shoes: First brush away the coarse dirt. Then rinse off finer dirt with lukewarm water and let the shoes dry again. And use First Amsterdam if necessary.
  3. Re-thread the laces.

Follow these steps to keep your shoes in top condition and extend their lifespan.

Simpatex Shoe Maintenance

If you have shoes with Simpatex, it is important to also clean the inside of the shoe. Simpatex is a membrane that is waterproof, windproof and breathable. Salt crystals from perspiration (every foot perspires) nestle in the pores of the membrane. These salt crystals reduce the breathability, which means that your feet quickly become warm.

To prevent this, remove the insole and laces from your hiking boots and rinse the shoes several times with lukewarm water (do not use hot water or cleaning agents). The salt crystals will dissolve and the Simpatex can function optimally again. Then let the shoes dry slowly (4 to 5 days). Do not place them near a fire or heater, because this will dry out the leather and rubber.

Follow these steps to maintain the functionality of your Simpatex shoes and keep your feet comfortable.

What you should absolutely not do

1. Never dry your shoes near a heat source: Never let your shoes dry near a fire, in direct sunlight, behind a car window, in the trunk or near a heater. This causes the leather to dry out too quickly, which can cause it to crack and change the fit of the shoe.

2. Use on the beach or in salt water: Do not use your shoes on the beach or in salt water. If you do not rinse the shoes thoroughly with lukewarm water afterwards, the sole may come loose or the leather may dry out.

3. Do not put your shoes in the closet unused: Do not put your shoes in the closet for a long time without care after intensive use. When shoes get wet regularly, the pores of the leather continue to open and close. If the shoes suddenly end up in the attic or in the closet, the sole may crumble or the leather may become stiff and brittle. To prevent this, clean and grease the shoes before storing them.

4. Do not use spray impregnator from the standard shoe store: Do not use spray impregnator from the standard shoe store or shoemaker. These products are often based on silicone and stop the breathable function of, for example, Gore-Tex or Simpatex shoes.

Follow these tips to extend the life of your shoes and keep them in optimum condition.
